VOTERS SUPPORT TAX RATE CAP

According to a new poll, 68% of North Carolina voters want to limit the power of politicians to raise taxes with a Constitutional Amendment capping income tax at 5.5%.

That’s a five-point increase in voter support for a tax limitation since last year.

It’s a no-brainer. By reducing Governor Perdue’s sky-high taxes and leaving more money in the economy and the pockets of hard working families and business owners, the reform majority has helped expand jobs and economic growth faster than the rest of the nation. And it’s given us budget surpluses, including $550 million so far this year.

Shouldn’t economic gains be locked in by putting a leash on what greedy politicians might do in the future? Governor Cooper claims he is against tax increases. But if his judges draw new liberal districts for Democrats, or the state finds itself in tough economic times in the future, we can kiss that promise goodbye. The Legislature should slam a break on the power of politicians to raise taxes. Listen to the people and let them vote on a Constitutional Amendment capping income taxes.
