SLOW PROGRESS REFORMING EDUCATION, BUT IT’S STILL PROGRESS
The schools are like a huge battleship. You can’t turn it around quickly. But there’s evidence reform is taking hold in North Carolina, but slowly.
The Conservative Majority in the State Senate has emphasized tenure reform to make it easier to dismiss ineffective teachers but the House has blocked the reform. That might be why North Carolina ranks F in dismissing ineffective teachers. Neither has the House supported the Senate’s merit pay initiative.
Still, we made progress. Teachers received an average $3300 raise last year. Merit pay needs attention now.
