Obamacare Expansion Appeasement Didn’t Save Virginia Republicans.
Virginia Republicans passed ObamaCare expansion and lost the Legislature anyway:
“Wrestling the House of Delegates and Senate from the GOP gives Democrats across-the-board political control in Richmond for the first time in 26 years. Democratic Gov. Ralph Northam still has two years left in his term. The Associated Press called both tallies for the Democrats, who needed to pick up several seats across both chambers to take control.”
“Tonight, the ground has shifted in Virginia government,” Mr. Northam said. “The voters have spoken, and they have elected landmark Democratic majorities in both the Senate and the House of Delegates.”
The Virginia contests drew intense national attention, high-profile campaigners and millions of dollars in out-of-state donations, and were seen as a key test of voter enthusiasm and party momentum before the nationwide 2020 elections.
Todd Gilbert, the Republican House majority leader who also kept his seat, sounded a warning after the GOP’s loss:
“Make no mistake: radical liberals from out of our Commonwealth will soon demand a return on the tens of millions they invested to elect a far-left Democratic majority,” he said.
Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee President Jessica Post said her group spent more than $1.5 million to help swing the races:
“While Republicans floundered under the albatross of Trump, Democrats focused on the issues that matter most to voters,” she said. “Our candidates were united in protecting health care expansion, passing common-sense gun safety and investing in schools.”
Message for North Carolina’s reform majority: Stand together because appeasing the left by spitting in the eye of your own coalition won’t save you.
