National School Choice Ally Corey DeAngelis Cheers On NC Legislation
We were glad to see North Carolina receive national attention for its school choice push to expand Opportunity Scholarships.
National school choice advocate Corey DeAngelis, who headlined a Carolina Partnership for Reform policy luncheon at the Umstead Hotel in Cary in late 2021, tweeted about the recent proposed North Carolina legislation that expands the number of families who can participate in getting a better educational environment for their children.
DeAngelis said the legislation would “fund students instead of systems. All North Carolina families would be eligible….”
DeAngelis is a senior fellow at the American Federation for Children, adjunct senior fellow at the Reason Foundation, and executive director at the Educational Freedom Institute.
When asked in a recent podcast how teachers unions have pushed parents to become more comfortable in supporting school choice, DeAngelis said “teachers unions overplayed their hand. They pushed, they lobbied explicitly to the CDC to keep the schools closed. That hurt parents from all different political backgrounds…
“And just putting politically divisive topics into the classroom, that has Democrats running to the middle as well, Democratic parents. They just want kids to learn the basics. If the schools aren’t even doing a good job with math, reading, and writing, why do the schools think that they should try to focus on other things that could be even more complicated than math, reading, and writing?”
