How Many Times Can They Cry Wolf?
Cooper’s office last week: Tax cuts would “damage” ability to fund education
Cooper in 2017: Tax cuts will “sacrifice” education funding
Reality: Annual education funding increased by more than $1 BILLION since 2017
For years, Gov. Roy Cooper has trotted out the same tired talking points to argue against tax cuts. He claims tax cuts will cause government revenue to crater, which will lead to education funding cuts and teacher layoffs.
His office said last week, “These tax cuts could really damage that stable and predictable source of funding that our schools rely on.”
And here’s what he said in 2017, three months after taking office: “We cannot sacrifice education at the altar of even more corporate tax cuts or giveaways that are mostly for the wealthiest.”
The problem? He’s been wrong for six straight years.
According to the nonpartisan Fiscal Research Division, education funding wasn’t “sacrificed” when Cooper first made this claim in 2017. In fact, annual education funding is more than $1 billion higher!
The very budgets that Cooper has long claimed will decimate state revenues have actually yielded multi-billion surpluses.
How many times can Gov. Cooper cry wolf?
He’s welcome to oppose tax cuts all he wants, but good grief, pick a new argument.
