Cooper’s Education State of Emergency Rouses National Attention

Governor Roy Cooper’s declaration of a State of Emergency in reaction to the North Carolina legislature’s expansion of Opportunity Scholarships to all children has made national headlines.

National school choice advocate Corey DeAngelis – keynote speaker at a Carolina Partnership for Reform 2021 luncheon – responded:

“BREAKING: North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper declares a STATE OF EMERGENCY to fight against school choice.

This hypocrite sent his own kid to a private school.

We're freeing families from the clutches of the teachers unions once and for all & there's nothing he can do about it.”

DeAngelis wrote further:

“They're losing control over the minds of other people's children and they can't handle it. Good.”

Purple Strategies partner Rory Cooper (no relation) tweeted a response to the Governor’s impassioned declaration:

"If I *were* the Governor of NC, I would've been declaring a state of emergency when the state was in the bottom third of states reopening schools and depriving children of the education they needed. Not once parents got involved and demanded something better for their kids."

It is interesting that the Governor sided with the NCAE over parents and their children when education was suffering the most during COVID.

But now he plays to the political crowd with his dramatic “Declaration” and pleas for public schools, risking the cries of hypocrisy since according to press reports he sent his daughter to private school in Raleigh.

We are living in interesting times.
