This journey of uncertainty brought on by the COVID-19 virus has provided several flashes of lucidity. One flash bouncing around the newswaves Friday came from none other than liberal Bill Maher – the comedian once known for the TV show Politically Incorrect – who launched a tirade calling for the world to begin telling the truth about the current pandemic and its origins in China.
“Scientists, yes, scientists who are generally pretty liberal, have been naming diseases after the places they come from for a very long time,” Maher explained. “Zika [virus] is from the Zika Forest, Ebola from the Ebola River, Hantanavirus [from the] Hantan River. There’s the West Nile virus, Guinea worm and Rocky Mountain spotted fever, and, of course, the Spanish flu. MERS stands for Middle Eastern Respiratory Syndrome. It’s plastered all over airports and no one blogs about it. So why should China get a pass?… Can’t we even have a pandemic without being offended?”
This is really rich stuff. Maher went on to decry “wet markets” in China that sell exotic animals for people to eat, a practice which international health care experts have suggested caused the COVID-19 virus. Maher pointed to “a 2007 Hong Kong study that showed a SARS-CoV-like virus was apparent in horseshoe bats and China’s practice of eating exotic animals was a ticking “time bomb.” He continued, “We can’t afford the luxury anymore of non-judginess towards a country that’s habits kill millions of people everywhere, because this isn’t the first time. SARS came from China, and the bird flu and the Hong Kong flu, the Asian flu.”
It is refreshing to hear all this from a liberal who was one of the first to highlight political correctness and used it as his launch to fame when it was seen as funny, absurd and something that would never become the norm in America. Of course, today, “PC” has become the norm and liberals bully conservatives and blackmail them into submission on about every issue under the threat of not being politically correct.
The truth needs to come out about what China and the World Health Organization did and did not do in the early stages of this pandemic that could have prevented its spread. If Bill Maher’s rant somehow helps highlight what appears to be an on-going attempt by China to protect its precious image and reputation at all cost – even as the rest of the world has suffered from the China virus that apparently came from humans eating bats – that’s a good thing.
