Those with a long memory will recall 1977, when Democrat Jim Hunt took over from the first Republican Governor in nearly 100 years, Jim Holshouser. Betty McCain, Hunt’s campaign chair, famously said, “Fire the culprits.” The “culprits” were Republicans who had managed to get state jobs under Holshouser after being blackballed for years under the Democrats.
Of course, Roy Cooper was a loyal foot soldier in the Hunt machine. And he’s already stacking his senior staff with left-wing lieutenants. Does anyone really think he won’t launch a purge of well-qualified Republicans now, just like Hunt and McCain?
Suggestion: The Legislature should pass some job protections, to keep Roy Cooper from purging state government and filling it full of liberal political hacks.
