Over opposition from liberal groups like the AFL-CIO, conservative reformers restored the work requirement for single, childless, able bodied adults on food stamps.
Since 2009,the Obama Administration has given states the option to allow single, childless, able bodied adults who don’t work to draw food stamps for more than the three month limit . That three month limit, enacted by President Clinton and the Republican Congress in 1996,required single, childless, able bodied adults to either get a job, join a workfare program or lose food stamps.
The Legislature’s action stops NCDHHS from requesting any more waivers of the work requirement.
Now, adults without dependents who can work will have to work or get off the dole. Senator Apodaca’s Rules Committee added the work requirement onto a House passed bill.
